* -while exploring new production techniques using old and unlikely hardware, the results were so unusual that i really had the sense that these pieces of equipment didn t actually create these sounds, rather they were in fact some kind of elaborate reception device that allowed me to tune into transmissions from distant galaxies. the music i could hear was actually the received transmissions of pop hits from those distant galaxies that were being played on their radio stations. i quickly recorded all that i could before losing the transmission.
* i consulted with dr andrew read, the astrophysicist with whom i recorded guitar treatments in 1999. he has worked on the discovery of the most distant galaxies and astronomical objects in the universe. together we came up with a possible list of where these musical transmissions may have come from.

after retiring from the jamaican police force arthur duke reid established his treasure isle liquor store and sound system in pink lane kingston and was crowned the undisputed king of sound and blues in 1956, 57 and in 58. the duke then moved into record production and after relocating the store to 33 bond street, he then built a recording studio on top of his new premises in 1966. according to the musicians and singers the wooden construction of the treasure isle recording studio gave the music a distinctive warmth and richness and with resident engineer byron baron/smithy smith at the controls, the sound of a bond street recording was immediately recognisable.

kalipo is jakob hŠglsperger from berlin who devotes himself to experimental electronica. his debut album yaruto follows a series of remixes and contributions to compilations released by antime and stiff little spinners. on it, hŠglsperger tries to create a both unique and timeless sound that takes cues from dance music, downbeat and gamelan traditions alike. making use of his wide array of analogue synthesizers, a rhodes piano, a metallophone and guitars, hŠglsperger is creating the abstract narrative of an impersonal biography by creating moods that correspond with certain stages of life as well as chopped up vocal samples.

on moving to canada from his original home of haiti, pianist and singer/songwriter henri-pierre noel brought with him much of the tropical island s influences. the kompa funk sounds of his homeland, along side contemporary north american jazz and disco, ran throughout henri s 1979 album piano, re-released by wah wah 45s in 2012, and now its time for a second helping with the re-issue of 1980s dance floor friendly one more step, both albums having been originally released on very limited private presses and since become holy grails of the back music scene.
